Romanian-owned project aims to turn Sibiu magnesium deposit into economic security
Mineral Proiect Invest is launching a fully Romanian-funded magnesium mining venture in the Valea Dobra area of Rășinari, targeting strategic raw material supply for green industries.
A new mining project centered on the magnesium-rich serpentine deposit in Valea Dobra, near Rășinari, is being developed by Mineral Proiect Invest under its MPI Magnesium brand, with all capital sourced domestically. The plan includes obtaining a mining concession and beginning the first phase of extraction, positioning Romania as a producer of value-added strategic minerals rather than a mere supplier. Proponents argue that domestic production is essential for European energy transition security and national economic stability.
Beyond extraction, the firm has committed voluntary funds for local infrastructure, health, education and tourism projects, managed by the Rășinari council. Technical execution will be handled by leading Romanian companies, collectively employing thousands and generating significant turnover. The project is framed as a model of transparent, technology-driven industrial sovereignty.
Why it matters
Securing local magnesium production could lessen Europe's dependence on foreign raw materials critical for green technologies.
