Romanian President Nicușor Dan addresses UN General Assembly and joins Ukraine-focused meetings

President Nicușor Dan spoke on behalf of Romania at the opening of the United Nations General Assembly's 81st session, emphasizing Bucharest's contributions to institutional reform and its commitment to peace, security and a rules-based global system. Following his national address, he joined a series of high-level meetings focused on Ukraine, including a session of the UN Security Council that examined the conflict. The General Assembly, presided over by Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh, convenes annually with all 193 member states and hosts a two-week period of plenary debates and thematic gatherings.

Among the events this week are sessions marking the 40th anniversary of the Declaration on the Right to Development and discussions on climate action and a just transition. Romania previously served as a non-permanent member of the Security Council in several past years.
