Romanian President Nicuşor Dan Calls for Stronger Legal Protection of Natural Heritage at Climate Summit

President Nicuşor Dan urged the Romanian state to embed natural-heritage protection into public policy during the Climate Change Summit 2026 in Bucharest.

At the Climate Change Summit 2026 held in Bucharest, President Nicuşor Dan delivered a message stressing that protecting natural heritage must become a pillar of Romanian public policy. He argued that secure, affordable energy and climate-ready infrastructure must coexist with the preservation of forests, rivers and habitats that underpin public health and wellbeing. Dan cited the Green Belt Bucharest-Ilfov initiative, the protection of Roşia Montană, and efforts to safeguard Lake Terchirgiol as examples of projects that require integrated planning and community involvement.

He urged the government to provide predictable regulations, rigorous assessments and dedicated funding for conservation, as well as to support wildlife-rehabilitation centres such as the Association for the Conservation of Biological Diversity in Petreşti. Representatives from the IPCC, OECD, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Food Bank discussed future infrastructure, economic competitiveness and climate resilience alongside Dan’s proposals.

Why it matters

The president’s call could shape Romania’s environmental legislation and affect how climate policies balance development with ecosystem protection.
