Romanian President Sets October 5 Date for Fourth PM Nomination
President Nicușor Dan said he will propose a new prime minister on October 5 after parliament rejected Siegfried Mureșan's cabinet.
President Nicușor Dan revealed from Prague that he will make his fourth prime-ministerial designation on October 5, after the parliament turned down the cabinet proposed by Siegfried Mureșan. Dan said he still has several options and reiterated his refusal to allow the far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) into a governing coalition, arguing it would jeopardise Romania’s pro-Western stance and fiscal policy.
He suggested that the Liberal Party, the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania and the Save Romania Union could either join or back a government centered on the Social Democratic Party. The president’s strategy aims to recreate a former four-party coalition without the reformist Liberal wing linked to former premier Ilie Bolojan and likely without USR. Failure to secure enough centre-right support could force Dan to call early elections.
Why it matters
The decision will shape Romania’s next government and its alignment with EU and NATO policies.
