Romanian prosecutors detain 27 over violent clashes at Victory Square protest

Following the farmer protest on September 15 in the Victory Square area, Bucharest prosecutors have taken 27 suspects into custody for alleged assault, vandalism and disruption of public peace. Ten of those arrested were ordered into preventive detention for 30 days, and fourteen more have pending proposals for the same measure. Three individuals were subjected to a 60-day judicial control regime, which includes prohibitions on participating in public assemblies.

In the days after the protest, investigators carried out 29 searches across 16 counties and summoned 30 people for questioning. Earlier phases of the case saw five people placed in preventive detention and another five under house arrest. The investigation is being coordinated by the Bucharest prosecutor's office together with the Bucharest Police's Violent Crime and Criminal Investigation units.
