Romanian prosecutors detain businessman Ionel Rusen and former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu over alleged fund-raising scheme

The report cited payments from businessman Ioan Niculae and Buzău entrepreneur Răzvan Leu, suggesting the funds may have been used for Georgescu’s campaign. Financial adviser Francisc Dokonal acknowledged that he transferred a portion of money received from Niculae to Rusen but denied any role in financing the political effort.
Prosecutors from DIICOT detained Rusen and Georgescu on Monday, while attempts to obtain statements from Niculae, Rusen, and other involved parties have been unsuccessful. Additional complaints allege that Leu was defrauded of a million euros, which he claims ended up supporting Georgescu’s campaign. The case also involves complex corporate arrangements and pending insolvency proceedings linked to Rusen’s and Dokonal’s businesses.
