Romanian Senate extends ban on Russian cybersecurity products
The Senate approved a bill to prolong the prohibition on public authorities buying Russian antivirus and security software.
The Romanian Senate voted to extend the ban on acquiring, installing and using antivirus and other cybersecurity products sourced from Russia or entities under Russian control for all public authorities. The bill, introduced by Sebastian Ioan Burduja and supported by parliamentarians from PNL, PSD and USR, passed with 104 votes in favor, one against and one abstention. It amends article three of the existing legislation, leaving the rest of the legal framework unchanged.
Law nr. 354/2022 already imposed a similar restriction, and the new amendment prolongs that measure. Officials argue the extension is necessary to protect state information systems given the broader conflict involving Russia. The proposal now moves to the next stage of parliamentary consideration.
Why it matters
Extending the ban helps shield Romania's public IT infrastructure from potential security risks linked to Russian software.
