Romanian soldiers and relatives list official combat rations for sale on online classifieds

Romanian army combat rations, meant for exercises and emergencies, are being sold on internet classifieds by soldiers and their families.

A probe uncovered that combat rations intended for Romanian military personnel are appearing on internet classifieds, offered by active soldiers and their relatives. The three-kilogram packs, designed for training or emergency situations, contain ready-to-eat meals, tea, honey, biscuits, fruit, isotonic drinks and a flame-free heating kit, and are listed for as little as 140 lei, below market rates for similar foods. A woman from Buzău, identified as the spouse of a serviceman, confirmed the items originate from her husband's unit and that additional packs can be obtained.

The Ministry of National Defense reported no evidence of theft from storage facilities and stated that those selling the rations are not subject to disciplinary sanctions. Officials emphasized that the rations are stored in unit depots and distributed only during exercises or crises, highlighting concerns over supply-chain control and potential misuse of military provisions.

Why it matters

The sale of military rations raises concerns about resource misuse and oversight within Romania's armed forces.
