Romanian Stem Cell Donor Registry Reports Expansion and Global Transplant Collaboration

At a press conference marking World Stem Cell Donor Day, Traian Laurian Arghişan disclosed that Romania's National Registry of Voluntary Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donors has built a sizable pool of volunteers after fourteen years of operation, with key centers such as Oradea, Arad, Timişoara, Bucureşti, Olt and Galaţi reaching notable enrollment levels. He reported that hundreds of transplant procedures have been carried out to date, and that in the first half of one outlet year, multiple grafts and additional cellular products were shipped internationally via air transport.

The registry is integrated with a global database of millions of potential donors across more than a hundred registries in dozens of countries, allowing Romanian patients to access foreign donors and foreign patients to benefit from Romanian donors. Arghişan emphasized the importance of expanding the national donor pool to exceed five percent of the population, noting that a significant share of patients lack compatible donors in existing international registries.
