Romanian wages dip in August as auto sector collapses, gambling jobs surge

Average net pay in Romania fell in August, driven by a sharp decline in the automotive industry, while earnings in gambling and betting rose sharply.

According to data released by the National Institute of Statistics, Romania's average net salary decreased in August, reflecting lower earnings in most sectors after earlier bonuses and benefits were paid out. The automotive industry experienced the steepest fall, with wages dropping about 18.3% as a result of vacation periods and cut bonuses. In contrast, the gambling and betting sector posted the largest month-to-month increase, leading overall wage growth.

The IT sector continued to offer the highest net pay, followed by oil and gas extraction, while fishing, aquaculture and other service activities recorded the lowest earnings. Public-sector wages also slipped slightly in health, education and administration. Despite the monthly dip, average net pay remains higher than a year earlier, though real wage growth is being eroded by inflation.
