Romanian workers over 55 show strong interest in staying employed past retirement

A study finds that 42% of Romanian employees aged 55 and older would consider working beyond the statutory retirement age, outpacing the European average.

According to a recent study, 42% of Romanian employees aged 55 and older would be willing to continue working after reaching the legal retirement age, a rate higher than the 32% average in Europe. The same poll shows that 49% of Romanian HR decision-makers cite staff shortages, similar to the 52% reported across the continent. SD Worx Romania officials argue that retaining seasoned workers could mitigate these gaps, provided employers create flexible schedules, adjust workloads, and offer training, especially in new technologies.

While many older workers prefer early retirement for family, health, or personal goals, they also report higher job satisfaction and energy levels than younger colleagues. Confidence in future job prospects remains strong among older employees despite limited AI tool usage, though only a minority feel adequately supported for an increasingly automated workplace.

Why it matters

The findings highlight a potential pool of experienced talent that could ease Romania's labor shortages if employers adapt work conditions.
