Romanian youth romanticize Ceaușescu era despite never living through it

A video posted on Reddit’s r/Roumanie platform shows a young Romanian asserting that under Ceaușescu the state at least gave people something, contrasting it with current economic insecurity. The post generated hundreds of reactions, dividing users between those who condemn the romanticization of a repressive regime and those who highlight present-day challenges such as low salaries, unaffordable housing and precarious job prospects.

Sociologists Alex Dincovici and Răzvan Dumitru argue the nostalgia is not simply ignorance of history but an intergenerational, “hauntological” yearning for a past that promised stable futures. They note that older generations’ selective memories, social-media narratives, and the lack of viable alternatives today fuel this sentiment. The discussion also raises concerns about how such nostalgia could be exploited by political projects seeking to invoke the communist legacy for contemporary aims.
