Rome opens massive 1st‑century “Great Mosaic” and “Painted City” fresco to limited visitors
Mayor Roberto Gualtieri revealed the “Great Mosaic,” a 1st‑century wall mosaic measuring more than 32 feet high and 52 feet wide, uncovered beneath the Baths of Trajan near the Colosseum. The same underground gallery also displays the “Painted City” fresco, described as the largest wall fresco of its type, depicting a bustling port city. Archaeologist Francesco Pacetti said excavations are still determining the mosaic’s full extent, while experts such as Claudio Parisi Presicce noted the artworks’ remarkable condition. Visitors are being admitted in small groups of about fifteen on weekends while officials monitor humidity and climate impacts.
