Rome probe expands to include Israeli ministers, military chiefs over Global Sumud flotilla raids

Italian prosecutors have added senior Israeli officials and senior military officers to the investigation of the 2025 and 2026 Global Sumud flotilla interceptions, citing alleged beatings and torture of detained activists.

Italian magistrates have broadened their inquiry into the Global Sumud flotilla operations of October 2025 and May 2026 to include 13 high-ranking Israeli officials, ranging from former security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and current defence minister Israel Katz to senior army, navy and prison leaders. Prosecutors Lucia Lotti and Stefano Opilio, working under Francesco Lo Voi, traced the chain of command that ordered the boardings of the vessels in international waters off Crete and the subsequent transfers to Ashdod and detention facilities such as Ketziot.

Testimony from about fifty activists, video released by Ben-Gvir showing detainees handcuffed and mocked, and medical documentation of injuries support allegations of beatings, broken bones, sexual harassment and denial of basic care. The case also implicates Israeli police chief Daniel Levy, prison service head Kobi Yaakobi and several other security officials. Coordination with prosecutors from Portugal, Spain, France, Sweden, Poland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Australia, Finland and Slovakia aims to reconstruct the full command structure behind the alleged violations.

Why it matters

The probe could affect diplomatic relations and accountability for alleged human-rights abuses during Israeli naval operations.
