Ronaldo receives 30-day ban and fine for abandoning Portugal squad

Cristiano Ronaldo was handed a month-long suspension and a €255 fine after leaving the Portuguese national team camp ahead of a Nations League match.

The Portuguese Football Federation’s disciplinary panel imposed a 30-day exclusion and a €255 fine on Cristiano Ronaldo for departing the national team camp prior to the Nations League fixture with Denmark. The decision, cited by A Bola, means Ronaldo will be unavailable for upcoming internationals until the suspension expires. The episode follows a previous controversy in which Ronaldo remained on the bench during the Norway game and later accused coach Jorge Jesus of breaking promises.

Bernt Hulsker, a football expert, described the penalty as the most symbolic sanction he has witnessed. The fine amounts to roughly 2,700 Norwegian kroner. The federation has not yet indicated whether Jesus will keep Ronaldo in the squad after the incident.

Why it matters

The sanction highlights disciplinary standards for high-profile players in international football.
