Rooftop solar can shave over £400 off bills even in Britain’s cloudiest zones
Research shows that a typical 4kW rooftop solar system could save households in the UK’s cloudiest regions by more than £400 a year on electricity costs.
A recent Guardian analysis, based on figures from Recharge Renewable, indicates that even in Britain’s cloudiest locales a standard 4kW rooftop solar array can reduce a typical household’s electricity bill by roughly £450 annually, rising to more than £600 in brighter regions. Specific estimates include average savings of £440 in southern Scotland, £463 in Manchester, and between £571 and £618 for homes in Brighton and Southampton.
The potential for savings has grown as wholesale power prices have surged and installation expenses have dropped, prompting a record pace of new solar installations—the most in any six-month period since 2011. Most of the added capacity comes from residential rooftops, now accounting for just under a third of the nation’s total solar output, which helped solar supply 14.4% of Great Britain’s electricity in July. The study’s model assumes a south-facing system, no battery storage, and that households use 50% of the yearly generation, meaning those who shift daytime usage or add storage could save even more. However, with a typical system costing about £7,000 after VAT removal, affordability remains a barrier, leading to calls for government assistance for lower-income families.
