Royal Canadian Legion launches free membership drive as it celebrates a century
To mark its 100th anniversary, the Royal Canadian Legion is offering free membership nationwide through 2026 and is revamping its programs to attract younger Canadians.
Marking a century of service, the Royal Canadian Legion has introduced free membership for all new entrants until 2026, hoping to broaden its appeal beyond veterans. Local halls are diversifying their offerings, with examples like yoga sessions alongside historic memorabilia, and low-cost dinners and concerts to draw younger participants. Nujma Bond, the Legion’s national spokesperson, emphasized that while core veteran support will remain, the influx of fresh members and ideas will help the organization grow.
The national office reports over 100,000 new sign-ups this year, raising total membership to more than 300,000. Some branches, however, have recently closed due to financial strain, such as locations in Halifax and Edmonton. Dennis Mills, president of the Bala Legion in Muskoka Lakes, Ontario, described how his branch turned around from near-closure by expanding community programs and plans to add affordable rental units to sustain operations.
