Royal Caribbean cruise rerouted to Nova Scotia after storm cancels Bahamas leg

A Royal Caribbean cruise bound for the Bahamas was diverted to Halifax, Nova Scotia because a severe storm forced a change, affecting over 5,000 passengers.

Royal Caribbean’s luxury liner Oasis of the Seas, carrying more than 5,000 guests, had to abandon its planned Caribbean itinerary after a powerful storm made the original route unsafe. Instead of reaching the Bahamas, the ship altered course and docked in Halifax, Nova Scotia, following its departure from New Jersey. The cruise line notified passengers only hours before sailing and provided financial vouchers and travel credits as compensation.

Guests such as Marie Durning and Nicholas Meli voiced disappointment, while others like Dwayne Hicks and Jim Matthews tried to keep spirits high with jokes about the cold detour. The one-day layover saw travelers strolling the harbor promenade, taking short boat trips, and enjoying the city before the vessel left Canadian waters to head back to its U.S. home port.

Why it matters

The incident shows how severe weather can abruptly disrupt cruise itineraries, impacting thousands of travelers and prompting costly compensation.
