Royal family hosts first parliamentary dinner with Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra

King Haakon, Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Queen Sonja will co-host the annual parliamentary dinner at the Palace, marking the princess’s debut and sparking talk about the menu amid the king’s reduced meat consumption.

Thursday night’s Stortingsmiddag at the Palace will be hosted by King Haakon, Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Queen Sonja, a historic first with the princess in a hosting role. The dinner, a tradition dating back to 1906, honors elected officials and will see the royal trio ensuring a welcoming atmosphere for guests. Expert Tove Taalesen said Ingrid Alexandra’s responsibilities include representing the monarchy and creating a pleasant ambience, and she hinted at possible new jewellery or a fresh gown for the occasion.

Taalesen also addressed speculation about the menu, noting that King Haakon’s recent reduction of meat in his diet, revealed in a 2023 TV series, is unlikely to affect the official banquet, which typically showcases a variety of Norwegian produce. The royal kitchen is expected to serve meat, fish and vegetables, reflecting the country’s culinary diversity and the king’s role as patron of Norwegian farmers.

Why it matters

The event highlights a generational shift in Norway’s monarchy and public interest in royal dietary choices.
