Royal Hospital implants Oman's first CardioMEMS heart-failure monitoring sensor
The National Heart Center at Royal Hospital in Muscat has successfully placed the country's inaugural CardioMEMS sensor, enabling remote monitoring of heart-failure patients.
In Muscat, the National Heart Center of Royal Hospital achieved a national first by implanting a CardioMEMS sensor for heart-failure management. Consultants Dr. A’ref Al Balushi and Dr. Amna Al Busaidi, both experts in advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology, carried out the minimally invasive catheter procedure that avoids open-heart surgery. The sensor continuously records pulmonary artery pressure and sends the data to the medical team, reducing the need for frequent hospital visits and enabling clinicians to intervene weeks before symptoms appear.
Dr. Najeeb Al Rawahi, director of the centre, said the technology aligns with Oman’s strategic plan to adopt innovative digital health solutions and reinforces the country's role as a regional cardiac-care hub. The initiative promises fewer emergency admissions and improved quality of life for patients and families.
