Royal Mail chief apologises and promises major overhaul before Christmas

CEO Alistair Cochrane said Royal Mail’s performance has fallen short, apologised and pledged to complete its biggest transformation across most sites before the festive period.

Royal Mail’s chief executive Alistair Cochrane issued an apology for the carrier’s sub-par service and vowed to finish its largest transformation in generations before the holiday rush. He cited recent data showing a 9% improvement for First Class and a 2% rise for Second Class letters, yet delivery rates still miss Ofcom’s 90% and 95% benchmarks. Cochrane said the overhaul has reached 70% of sites and will be rolled out to the remainder ahead of Christmas.

Owner Daniel Křetínský had earlier expressed regret to MPs, and the firm is recruiting 22,000 temporary workers for parcel hubs and sorting centres across England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. An extra 7,500 vans will join the existing fleet of 6,000 to support the seasonal surge. Chief operating officer Jamie Stephenson stressed the importance of the Christmas period for customers and the company’s commitment to meet its Universal Service Obligation.

Why it matters

Letter-delivery delays affect millions of households and businesses, especially during the crucial holiday season.
