Royal Parks warn visitors against feeding deer after stag injures picnickers

A man in his 60s was hurt by a stag that approached his group in Richmond Park, prompting renewed warnings not to feed or approach the deer.

Visitors to Richmond and Bushy Parks have been reminded that feeding the resident red and fallow deer is illegal and unsafe. A recent episode saw a stag approach a picnic party, resulting in chest injuries to a man in his 60s; wildlife officers later shot the animal as a precaution. Paul Richards, the manager of Richmond Park, explained that the deer’s habit of seeking food from people stems from previous feeding, leading to unpredictable and potentially dangerous behavior.

He emphasized that the animals have ample natural forage and do not need supplemental feeding, which can also cause health problems like plastic blockage. Authorities advise keeping a distance of at least 50 m, avoiding contact, and reporting any risky situations to police.

Why it matters

Feeding wild deer can change their behavior, creating safety hazards for park visitors.
