RSPCA probes deadly dog poisonings in Carnarvon, Western Australia
The RSPCA has launched an investigation after five dogs were poisoned in Carnarvon, Western Australia, resulting in three fatalities.
Authorities are investigating a spate of dog poisonings in the Gascoyne region, specifically in the town of Carnarvon, where five dogs became sick and three died. Stefan Louw, the Shire of Carnarvon's executive manager, confirmed the deaths occurred on Morgan Way and that the poisonings happened on two separate streets. One resident, Melinda Sattell, described how her dog Phoenix was found foaming at the mouth after eating a baited sausage, narrowly surviving but costing her family about $3,000 in veterinary care.
The Coral Coast Veterinary Hospital treated the affected pets and warned the community of organophosphate poisoning signs such as hypersalivation, constricted pupils, shaking and diarrhoea. Officials have advised owners to keep dogs on leashes outdoors and to be vigilant about anything their pets might ingest. The RSPCA is now leading the inquiry into the source of the poison.
