Rubins clarify $2 million renovation wasn’t a dog-only expense

Howard and Suze Rubin have put their 4,442-square-foot Pound Ridge retreat on the market for $2.9 million and are pushing back against a viral story that they spent $2 million renovating it just for their dog, Buster. According to Rubin, the extensive remodel covered essential upgrades like new mechanical systems, appliances, dual internet connections, two generators, a comprehensive camera network and a termite-protection system, costing several hundred thousand dollars on its own.

Pet-specific improvements—such as a fully fenced 2.76-acre lot, pet-friendly turf, a shallow sun shelf on the pool, and nine indoor TVs for Buster’s entertainment—were added within the broader renovation. The Rubins purchased the property in 2019 for $1.82 million, intending to run a pet-friendly rental that was shelved due to the pandemic. Their longtime listing agent, Sally Slater of Douglas Elliman, noted Rubin’s meticulous nature as the driver of the upgrades. The couple, who have a long history of keeping various animals, are now selling because Buster’s arthritis requires a move to their Florida home, which is more accessible for him.
