Rubio skips midterm campaign tour while other Trump officials hit the road
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stayed off the midterm campaign trail, unlike several other senior Trump administration officials who have been traveling to support Republican candidates.
With just over two months left before the midterm elections, several senior Trump officials have been touring the nation to back Republican candidates, including War Secretary Pete Hegseth, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and Attorney General Todd Blanche. In contrast, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has not joined the campaign circuit, emphasizing his focus on the extensive foreign-policy agenda assigned by President Trump.
A State Department spokesperson explained that a long-standing policy prohibits Senate-confirmed appointees from attending partisan conventions to avoid any appearance of partisanship in foreign affairs. The aide cited Rubio’s preference for substantive policy work over campaign activities and noted his low unfavorable rating could make him an effective surrogate if he chose to run. Nonetheless, Rubio’s current stance keeps him out of the Republican National Committee’s upcoming midterm convention in Dallas, where President Trump and Vice President JD Vance are slated to speak.
