Rufián declares failure to forge a unified left list ahead of 29-N deadline
Gabriel Rufián announced that the push for a single left-wing list for the upcoming 29-N election has collapsed and is unlikely to materialise.
Gabriel Rufián told Rac1 that with only a few hours left before the filing deadline for the 29-N election, the attempt to create a single left-wing list has effectively failed. He lamented the lost opportunity for a genuine united front between Comuns and ERC, describing the ongoing negotiations as a disastrous spectacle. While condemning most parties—including BNG, Bildu, Compromís, Más Madrid and even ERC itself—he reserved commendation for Podemos and acknowledged Ada Colau’s good intentions but limited capacity to influence other factions.
Rufián insisted the failure does not reflect a lack of effort from negotiators, citing his own and Colau’s attempts, and argued that his personal presence might still draw votes for ERC. He concluded that his role is to secure a winning position for his party rather than to please everyone.
Why it matters
The breakdown hampers a united left front, potentially reshaping vote distribution in Spain's crucial 29-N election.
