Rugby legend Brian Smith passes away at 59, remembered by peers

Former Wallabies prop and dual-code international Brian Smith died of cancer at age 59, prompting tributes from fellow players.

Brian Smith, who earned six caps for Australia and nine for Ireland in rugby union, succumbed to cancer at 59. He also competed in the NRL for Balmain and Eastern Suburbs and later coached in several countries, including a stint as Australia’s sevens coach. Wallabies front-rower Angus Bell described him as a great bloke, father and coach. His death was noted across the rugby community.
