Russia claims overnight strikes on major Ukrainian steel plants and power sites
The Russian defence ministry said it carried out a large-scale night attack on Ukrainian infrastructure, targeting the ArcelorMittal steelworks in Kryvyi Rih, a substation in Zhytomyr, another plant in Zaporizhzhia and a cargo ship in the Black Sea.
The Russian defence ministry announced that its forces conducted a coordinated overnight operation against Ukrainian infrastructure. The ministry said the attack struck the ArcelorMittal steel plant in Kryvyi Rih, a facility that stopped production in September following a series of Russian ballistic missile strikes. It also reported damage to an electricity substation in the northwestern city of Zhytomyr and a second steel plant in Zaporizhzhia, a city close to the active front line.
Furthermore, the statement claimed a cargo ship in the Black Sea was hit, accusing it of delivering military cargo to the port of Odesa. The ministry asserted that the Kryvyi Rih plant supplies steel to Ukraine's military-industrial complex. No independent source has confirmed the Russian account of the attacks.
Why it matters
The reported strikes target critical industrial and energy assets that support Ukraine's war effort, potentially affecting its military capacity and civilian infrastructure.
