Russia fielding faster jet-powered Geran drones changes Ukraine's air defence tactics
In August, Russia deployed jet-engine Geran drones that fly three times faster than earlier Shahed models, prompting Ukraine to adapt its air-defence approach.
During August, Russia shifted its drone strategy by fielding jet-engine Geran models that travel at more than 480 km/h, roughly three times the speed of earlier Iranian-made Shahed drones, and can carry payloads of up to about 90 kg. Although their operational range is shorter than propeller-driven drones, their higher speed and altered airframe make them resemble cruise missiles. Experts note a significant advancement with the “seeker” version, which can identify, lock onto, and strike targets autonomously, even if the operator link is lost.
Ukraine has responded by using fast interceptor drones, F-16 fighters, and surface-to-air missiles against the Gerans, while also testing lower-cost jet-engine interceptor drones such as the Alexa Spatium, which can reach roughly 600 km/h. The Ukrainian president highlighted the need for further refinement before these interceptors can be fielded broadly. Components from China and Western commercial parts have been found in the Russian drones, raising concerns about supply chains.
