Russia spreads AI-fabricated ads claiming Ukraine forces women into conscription

Russian Telegram channels circulated AI-generated images that falsely portray Ukrainian women being drafted, a claim Kyiv says is disinformation.

A wave of AI-generated visuals appeared on Russian Telegram networks, depicting a woman holding an assault rifle while cradling a child, allegedly promoted as a Ukrainian military recruitment ad. The posts claim women are being forced into service, a narrative Kyiv refutes, stating that women are not subject to compulsory mobilization and can only join the Defense Forces voluntarily. The Center for Countering Disinformation labeled the material an "informational provocation" and noted that the images bear clear signs of AI manipulation, with Hive Moderation estimating a 99% probability of synthetic generation.

The disinformation effort, described as a systematic attempt to sow anxiety and discredit voluntary enlistment, also included fabricated draft notices for women in Kyiv and Kharkiv. Russian officials, including Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, have previously asserted that Ukraine would resort to forced mobilization of women, despite no such policy being in place.

Why it matters

The false ads aim to destabilize Ukraine's recruitment efforts and fuel panic, highlighting the role of AI in modern disinformation wars.
