Russian air strikes kill rescue worker and injure dozens in Cherson

Two Russian air attacks hit residential areas in Cherson's Schumensky district, killing a 64-year-old ambulance driver and later a 58-year-old man, while 44 people were wounded, including children.

Early Saturday morning, Russian forces launched two heavy air strikes on the Schumensky district of Cherson, targeting civilian housing. The blasts killed a 64-year-old ambulance driver on duty and later a 58-year-old resident who succumbed to his injuries. Forty-four residents suffered injuries, among them a twelve-year-old boy, an eleven-year-old girl and a one-month-old infant. The city's military administrator, Yaroslav Shanko, noted that residents have been fighting for survival since the invasion began in February 2022.

Why it matters

The strike highlights the persistent danger to civilians in Ukraine’s war-torn south and the human cost of ongoing Russian attacks.
