Russian bot network inflates fake US election videos with celebrity deepfakes

A Russian state-backed operation called Matryoshka is using bots to boost view counts of fabricated videos that attack Democratic candidates ahead of the US midterms.

Russian disinformation operators identified as the Matryoshka (or Operation Overload) network are deploying bots to amplify fabricated videos that portray celebrities denouncing Democratic politicians. The clips, which mimic established news outlets, have been posted on X using accounts that were previously inactive and now generate artificial view spikes of tens to hundreds of thousands. Claims such as James Talarico paying OnlyFans models or Jon Ossoff owning undeclared properties have been publicly denied and lack supporting evidence.

Researchers from Antibot4Navalny, Graphika and dTeam documented the pattern of daily narrative releases, often tagging mainstream media and flooding fact-checkers with emails. Although X has suspended many of the accounts, new bots quickly replace them, keeping the disinformation flow active. The operation reflects a broader Russian strategy to undermine confidence in the US electoral process by targeting Democrats across numerous races.

Why it matters

The campaign shows how AI-driven fake media can be weaponized to distort elections and erode public trust.

How the sides frame it

LOW AGREEMENT

Left-leaning coverage highlights the bogus celebrity accusations and the researchers exposing the bot-driven amplification, while right-leaning coverage emphasizes how the Russian operation works and questions its actual impact; center coverage reports unrelated debunking of a graph about far-right activity and notes the lack of evidence for reduced propaganda after data-centre attacks.

LEFT

Focuses on the fabricated celebrity accusations and the researchers documenting the bot-amplified disinformation.

CENTER

Reports debunked claims about a graph on far-right activity and the absence of a drop in Russian propaganda after data-centre strikes.

RIGHT

Focuses on the mechanics of the Russian operation and casts doubt on its real reach.

The left emphasises

  • fabricated videos portray celebrities denouncing Democratic politicians
  • claims such as James Talarico paying OnlyFans models lack supporting evidence
  • researchers documented daily narrative releases and flagged the pattern

The right emphasises

  • a network of automated accounts inflates view counts artificially
  • AI-generated videos feature well-known actors and musicians attacking Democrats
  • the actual reach of the operation is described as doubtful
