Russian drone strikes hit Dnipropetrovsk energy sites, leaving thousands without power

Russian drones attacked two DTEK energy facilities in the Dnipropetrovsk region, causing outages and prompting ongoing repairs.

DTEK reported that Russian drones hit two of its power facilities in Dnipropetrovsk between Thursday night and Friday morning, damaging electrical gear and igniting a fire following an oil spill. The strikes left a large number of homes without electricity, though no employees were harmed. Repair teams worked around the clock to restore service, while the capital city set up “points of invincibility” in several districts to provide heat, charging stations and basic amenities.

About 700 generators have been mobilised in Kyiv to support water and heating supplies, though some major pumping stations still lack backup power. The incidents follow a pattern of intensified Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy grid, which have caused water cuts and emergency load-shedding across the country.

Why it matters

The attacks worsen Ukraine's energy crisis, affecting civilian life and highlighting the vulnerability of critical infrastructure.
