Russian forces claim capture of villages in Kharkiv and Donetsk, report heavy Ukrainian losses

The Russian defence ministry announced that its troops have taken the villages of Reznyikove and Kupine in Kharkiv region and Novotrojicke and Petrovszke in Donetsk region, while saying more than 1,400 Ukrainian soldiers were killed or seriously wounded.

According to a statement from Moscow's defence ministry, Russian units seized Reznyikove and Kupine in the Kharkiv area and the Donetsk settlements of Novotrojicke and Petrovszke. The announcement added that Russian forces have advanced on all six front sectors and are continuing operations around the encircled Ukrainian units in Dobropillja. It also claimed that over 1,400 Ukrainian soldiers have either died or sustained severe injuries, and that Russian air defence shot down 909 Ukrainian drones in a single day.

Why it matters

The report signals a further escalation in the Russia-Ukraine conflict with new territorial gains and high Ukrainian casualties.
