According to the Russian defence ministry, the captain of a Russian frigate was decorated after he fired two flares at a Danish military helicopter, describing the action as a preventive measure against a provocation. Danish authorities contend that one of the flares passed alarmingly close to the helicopter, putting it at risk during a patrol mission near Gedser, the southernmost town on Falster. Denmark's defence minister Jeppe Bruus denied Russia's allegation that the helicopter acted provocatively.
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called the episode "extremely serious" in a statement. The incident occurred on a Monday while the helicopter was conducting routine surveillance. Both sides have exchanged accusations, highlighting heightened tensions in the Baltic region.
