Russian glide-bomb attack on Sumy kills two civilians, wounds three schoolchildren

Russian military aircraft dropped four glide-bombs on Sumy on Sept. 29, killing two civilians in a sparsely populated neighbourhood and injuring three children who were in a school shelter at the time. Sumy Oblast governor Oleh Hryhorov announced the casualties via social media and described the victims as ordinary residents. President Zelensky labeled the perpetrators as terrorists and urged America, Europe and other partners to increase pressure on Moscow.

The attack follows a pattern of intensified long-range strikes on front-line cities such as Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv, where glide-bombs have become a weapon of choice. Sumy lies just 25 km from the active front line and has been regularly targeted since a major Russian offensive in spring 2025. The incident underscores the ongoing danger to civilians in contested border regions.
