Russian IT specialist vanished in Ukraine after being sent to front-line assault

An IT worker from Chelyabinsk who enlisted to operate drones was deployed to a rifle regiment, sent on a combat mission and later reported missing.

Nikolai, an experienced software developer from Chelyabinsk, joined the Russian army in summer 2026 believing his service would benefit society and that he would work as a drone operator. The contract’s appendix listed drone duties, but he was assigned to the 1437th Motorized Rifle Regiment in Samara, where he performed housekeeping and clerk work without any weapons training. In September he phoned his wife from an unfamiliar number, tearfully stating he was being sent on a combat mission, after which the call ended.

The military later issued a notice that he had gone missing on September 28 while executing tasks in Ukraine. An email to his account showed a purchase of five laptops at the front, prompting his wife to suspect financial misconduct by his commanders.

Why it matters

The case highlights discrepancies between recruitment promises and actual deployment in Russia's war effort.
