Russian missile devastates Pryluky apartment block, killing 22 and wounding dozens

A Russian Kh-101 missile struck a five-storey apartment building in Pryluky, killing 22 people, including five children, and injuring 54.

A Russian Kh-101 missile struck a five-storey apartment building in the northern Ukrainian city of Pryluky on the morning of October 7 while many residents were still asleep. The attack killed 22 people, among them five children, and left 54 injured, including seven youngsters. President Volodymyr Zelensky called the strike a “birthday gift” from Putin.

Families devastated included Viktoria Bondarenko’s household, where a grandmother, her daughter and grandson perished; railway worker Oleksandr Ivanchenko, his wife Yulia and their two children; and Daria Maksiuta, her husband Oleksandr and their infant son. Police officer Oleh Malysh and his mother-in-law also died, while other relatives remain hospitalized. Employees of Ukrainian Railways and the oil firm Ukrnafta were among the dead, prompting Pryluky to declare three days of mourning.

Why it matters

The strike shows the ongoing civilian toll of the Russia-Ukraine war and highlights the vulnerability of residential areas.
