Russian officer slain in alleged Kyiv-linked hit in Sevastopol, governor says
A Russian military officer was killed in Sevastopol, the capital of Russia-occupied Crimea, in what officials describe as an assassination. A woman suspected of acting for Ukrainian intelligence was detained.
The regional governor, Mikhail Razvozhayev, reported that an officer of the Russian armed forces died during an apparent targeted killing in Sevastopol. Authorities say a female suspect, identified as a Russian citizen, has been arrested and is accused of carrying out the act on behalf of Ukrainian special services. The Federal Security Service (FSB) confirmed the woman's nationality, while Kyiv has not responded to the allegation.
The incident follows a series of similar accusations linking Ukraine to attacks on Russian military figures. In a separate incident, five people died overnight in the city during a bomb-disposal operation.
Why it matters
The killing highlights the volatile security situation in occupied Crimea and the broader Russia-Ukraine conflict.
