Russian Plague Lab Worker Dies, Prompting U.S. Health Officials to Monitor Situation

A 28-year-old researcher at an Irkutsk plague institute died after a suspected exposure, leading U.S. health agencies to closely track the case.

A 28-year-old employee of the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute, identified as Darya Shipilova, fell ill with pneumonia of unknown etiology and subsequently died, Russian health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor reported. While Russian investigators have not yet verified plague infection, the case has prompted the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to monitor the situation with partner agencies.

The CDC outlined that plague can appear in bubonic, pneumonic or septicemic forms, with pneumonic plague being the only transmissible form between humans. Comparisons were drawn to Ebola, COVID-19 and the historic Black Death, noting that plague is bacterial and treatable with antibiotics if caught early. Experts emphasized that modern plague cases are rare and manageable, but vigilance remains essential. The White House is also said to be aware of the developments and related quarantine measures.

Why it matters

The death raises concerns about laboratory safety and potential cross-border spread of a deadly bacterial disease.
