Russian strikes hit gas plant in Kharkiv and power grid in Dnipro, cutting electricity for thousands
Russian attacks on Oct. 21 damaged a Naftogaz gas production site in Kharkiv Oblast and disrupted power infrastructure in Dnipro, leaving about 30,000 customers without electricity.
On Oct. 21, Russian forces carried out two separate attacks on Ukrainian energy assets. A drone hit a Naftogaz-operated gas production installation in Kharkiv Oblast, and a later strike targeted power infrastructure in Dnipro around 1:30 p.m. local time. The power hit knocked out electricity for about 30,000 people in the Synelnykove and Pavlohrad districts and the town of Samar, according to Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Governor Oleksandr Hanzha, who did not specify the exact facility damaged.
Naftogaz confirmed the drone strike but said the security situation prevented an immediate assessment of the consequences. Acting Naftogaz CEO Serhii Fedorenko noted that Russian attacks on the company's sites have increased sharply this year. The Energy Ministry reported similar attacks across Kyiv, Volyn and Odesa oblasts, with thousands more losing power, highlighting the growing pressure on Ukraine's energy system ahead of winter.
Why it matters
The strikes further strain Ukraine's energy network just before winter, risking wider outages and economic disruption.
