Russian strikes target US-linked Coca-Cola and McDonald’s sites in Ukraine

In September a Russian drone hit a Coca-Cola bottling plant near Kyiv, and earlier a warehouse used by McDonald’s franchises was also struck, highlighting a new pattern of attacks on American businesses in Ukraine.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the Coca-Cola plant attack as a clear signal from Russia to the United States, calling the company an enemy that must be burned. Prior to that, Russian forces hit a storage facility serving McDonald’s franchise operations, prompting the chain to roll out a limited menu across the country. Andy Hunera of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine said Russia has long tried to deter U.S. firms, but the recent wave of strikes is unprecedented. These incidents suggest a strategic effort to pressure American economic presence in the conflict zone.

Why it matters

The attacks show Russia using economic pressure on U.S. firms to influence the war and deter foreign investment in Ukraine.
