Russian training tall ship Pallada completes goodwill visit to North Korea’s Wonsan

The Russian three-masted training vessel Pallada sailed to Wonsan, North Korea, fulfilled a series of diplomatic and cultural activities, and is now heading back to Vladivostok.

The Russian tall ship Pallada, a three-mast training vessel owned by the Far Eastern State Technical Fisheries University, docked in Wonsan, North Korea, after a stop that included commemorating the 81st anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japanese rule and touring a Soviet liberators’ memorial. Crew members also participated in cultural programs in the Kalma tourist zone, inspected a food-processing facility, and established a sister-city link with Wonsan University.

Captain Nikolay Zorchenko reported to one outlet that all planned goals were met, noting that several hundred locals gathered despite rain and thunderstorms. After departing on Monday, the Pallada will sail back to Vladivostok, where it is slated to take part in events for the upcoming Eastern Economic Forum. The vessel, originally built in Poland before the Soviet Union’s collapse, has trained more than 15,000 Russian Navy cadets since 1989 and has logged extensive voyages across multiple oceans.

Why it matters

The visit shows Russia’s limited diplomatic outreach via naval goodwill missions, highlighting its continued ties with North Korea.
