Rutte calls on NATO allies to boost air defence aid for Ukraine

NATO chief Mark Rutte urged member states to increase military assistance for Ukraine, stressing the need for more air-defence systems as Russia intensifies attacks on Kyiv.

At a press conference in Tallinn, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte appealed to NATO members for greater military aid to Ukraine, focusing on the urgent need for additional air-defence capabilities amid a wave of Russian drone and missile strikes on Kyiv. He warned that the coming winter will exacerbate the humanitarian impact if protection is not reinforced. Rutte made the appeal alongside Estonian Prime Minister Kristan Michal, who pledged continued Estonian support.

The comments precede Rutte's scheduled talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Brussels on the margins of an EU leaders' summit. The plea also touches on recent tensions with the United States over intelligence sharing, which Rutte dismissed after President Donald Trump affirmed that sharing has not stopped. Both leaders accused Russia of trying to wear down European resolve to aid Ukraine.
