Rwanda Secures Decade-Long Deal to Host First African Formula 1 Grand Prix

Rwanda has signed a ten-year agreement with Formula 1 to stage a Grand Prix on a new circuit in Bugesera, slated to begin in the early 2030s.

Rwanda and Formula 1 have finalized a ten-year contract to bring a Grand Prix to the country, with the inaugural event planned for the early 2030s on a newly constructed circuit in Bugesera, about 25 miles south of Kigali and adjacent to the new international airport. The track, created by former driver Alex Wurz and overseen by long-time F1 architect Tilke together with DAR, will integrate the hilly landscape to deliver a fast, flowing layout and strong spectator views.

President Paul Kagame said the race will generate lasting employment, skill development, tourism and business opportunities for the region. Formula 1 president Stefano Domenicali described the deal as a landmark moment that places the sport on every inhabited continent. The calendar slot remains undecided, with organizers likely to avoid the main rainy season of March-May, favoring the shorter October-November window. Human-rights groups may criticize the event as sportswashing, echoing concerns over Rwanda’s other sporting partnerships.
