Sabah chief minister backs Israel Houghton concert despite police objections
Sabah Chief Minister Shafie said the Israel Houghton concert should proceed if approved, while police have raised objections over security and sensitivities.
Sabah Chief Minister Shafie expressed that the Israel Houghton concert may be held provided it receives the required approvals and adheres to existing regulations. He emphasized that supporting Christian worshipers’ right to attend does not equate to endorsing the artist’s individual or political positions. Police Commissioner Jauteh Dikun indicated the police would advise the state government to postpone the show if organizers submit a formal request, citing two police reports that label the event currently inappropriate due to the singer’s association with Israel and resulting public sensitivities.
Former UMNO Sabah treasurer Salleh Said Keruak similarly argued the concert should continue if security concerns are addressed sensibly. Houghton, a Grammy-winning American Christian musician known for his work with Israel & New Breed, has attracted attention for his recent accolades. Shafie called for authorities to facilitate the event once all conditions are met and urged all parties to act with restraint and mutual respect.
