Sabah PKR chief condemns upside-down Malaysian flag protest in Melbourne

A Malaysian NGO displayed the national flag upside down outside Melbourne's Parliament House, prompting criticism from Sabah PKR chief Mustapha.

Activists from the NGO Sabah Sarawak Keluar Malaysia staged a protest outside Melbourne's Parliament House, where they raised the Malaysian flag upside down. Mustapha, who leads the Sabah branch of PKR, denounced the act as unrepresentative of the polite culture of Sabah and Sarawak residents and warned it could harm the reputation of Malaysians studying and working in Australia. He appealed to the public to file police complaints so that the protest and related social-media posts can be investigated.

Mustapha also emphasized that demands for Sabah and Sarawak rights can be pursued through constructive dialogue with one outlet federal administration. He recalled that more than two decades ago, the Malaysia Agreement 1963 was a sensitive topic that led to arrests, but today it is part of the Madani government's agenda. The incident highlights ongoing tensions over regional autonomy within Malaysia.

Why it matters

The protest could affect Malaysia's image abroad and underscores continuing debates over Sabah and Sarawak's rights.
