Safe and Offshore Norge Reach Oil Agreement, Averting Strike for 1,300 Workers

After two hours of overtime mediation, Safe and Offshore Norge secured a deal on the Oil Agreement, preventing a strike for about 1,300 land-based employees.

Safe and Offshore Norge finalized an oil-industry collective agreement after two hours of overtime mediation, averting a strike that could have affected roughly 1,300 land-based employees. Negotiations were headed by Elisabeth Brattebø Fenne, who praised the constructive talks in a statement released Friday night. The agreement functions as a framework deal, meaning that individual wage terms will be settled locally by each employer.

Sixteen staff members at Equinor, Norske Shell and Esso Norge were slated for possible strike action before the deal was reached. Safe is simultaneously engaged in mediation with Reach Subsea over a separate offshore agreement, which has a midnight deadline on Saturday. The resolution underscores the effectiveness of compulsory mediation in Norway’s labor relations system.

Why it matters

The deal prevents a large-scale strike that would have disrupted Norway's oil sector and affected thousands of workers.
