Saffie Osborne makes history as first woman to win a British Classic

In a landmark moment at Doncaster, 24-year-old jockey Saffie Osborne piloted Highwayman to the finish line of the Betfred St Leger, securing the first ever Classic win by a female rider. The horse, a recent Vinnie Roe Stakes victor, was entered as a spare mount for trainer Joseph O’Brien after a successful campaign. Osborne, who had not even secured a ride earlier in the week, described the experience as surreal and credited her agent Tony Hind and her family for their support.

The race unfolded with Highwayman taking the lead on the long straight, fending off a late challenge from second-favorite Enceladus. The triumph came on the 250th anniversary of the St Leger, underscoring its historic significance.
