Sailor's father warns nine-month carrier deployment is too long for crew

Jefferson Kelley voiced alarm that his son Jackson’s nine-month deployment on the USS Abraham Lincoln far exceeds the standard six-month rotation, stressing the burden on the carrier’s 5,000 sailors and Marines. He pointed to the vessel’s outdated systems, heavy maintenance needs, and reports of basic supply shortages, water contamination, and plumbing problems that families fear are harming mental health. Senator Richard Blumenthal sent a letter to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth demanding clarification, while the Navy and U.S. Central Command rejected allegations of rising suicidal ideation and affirmed that crew members have access to clean water, air conditioning, nutritious meals, and counseling services.

Acting Navy secretary Hung Cao met with concerned families, yet doubts persist, and Kelley even offered to replace his son to bring him home. The USS George Washington departed Vietnam to take over the Lincoln’s duties, but an expected overlap means the carrier may not return to its home port in San Diego for several weeks, creating a temporary gap in the Indo-Pacific presence.
